Book Talk Guidelines: Have an interesting opening statement that prepares the audience for the information you will present. Have an organizational structure that has a clear focus throughout the talk (at least 10 points of interest). Include details and information that will help the listeners understand the ideas clearly. Communicate big ideas, theories, and insights that have been elaborated on or illustrated through facts, details, quotations, statistics and information. ** Use a visual aid (diagram, chart, illustration, etc.) which appropriately supports the information in the book.
TIPS for Book Talks:
- Rehearse/practice at home
- Have your notes organized
- Have a copy of the book
- Use an introduction that attracts audience attention
- Maintain eye contact with the audience
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for the book
- Read aloud from an interesting passage
- Tell enough about the book to be interesting without giving the whole plot away.
- Make the class want to read the book.
- Stay within the time limit (typically 2-3 minutes)
